10 Shows to Binge-Watch With Your Roommates

By Elise Nelson on September 5, 2017

For those nights when you and your roommates just don’t want to go out, here are 10 TV shows worth binge-watching together. Grab your popcorn, put on some pajamas, and press play.

Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy

1. Stranger Things

If you and your roomies love all things ’80s, you’re going to obsess over Stranger Things. This 2016 Netflix original series channels inspiration from a handful of ’80s films, including E.T. and The Goonies.

Stranger Things follows three young boys as they race to find their missing friend in another dimension before other-worldly creatures reach him first.

A second season is about to be released in October, so catch up on the first eight episodes now!

2. American Horror Story

Ryan Murphy’s popular anthology series will keep you on the edge of your seat — and keep you awake at night.

Each season features a different gore-filled theme that plays with your biggest psychological fears. American Horror Story’s unpredictable plot lines are what make the show so binge-worthy, but you definitely don’t want to watch this show alone …

Watch season seven, American Horror Story: Cult, this September on FX.

Comedy

3. The Office

There’s no better way to bond with your roommates than laughing over this mockumentary-style comedy show about a “typical” American office setting.

Although The Office is no longer on the air, the shenanigans that take place in Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc. never get old. A camera crew follows manager Michael Scott and his employees around the office and other Scranton, PA locations to capture every hysterical, strange moment.

The entire NBC series can be found on Netflix.

4. How I Met Your Mother

This show is perfect for anyone who has seen Friends. Through a series of flashbacks, Ted Mosby tells his children about his life in New York with his four best friends.

One of the most addicting qualities of How I Met Your Mother is that it’s so relatable. Each character has their own quirks that you’ll likely see in yourself. You and your roommates will spend hours trying to designate the Lily Aldrin or Barney Stinson of your friend group.

How I Met Your Mother can be found on Netflix and Hulu. Reruns of the show also air daily in chronological order on FX.

5. Modern Family

Modern Family has something for everybody to enjoy. There’s romance, there’s banter, and even a little drama as three related families face daily tribulations.

The show has received praise for its representations of multicultural, traditional, straight, and gay families living happily in unison. Modern Family takes on the mockumentary television style that will keep you laughing every minute.

Modern Family is in its ninth season, which will premiere in late September on ABC.

Mystery/Action

6. Sherlock

Based on the book series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock puts a modern spin on classic Sherlock Holmes stories. Watch Benedict Cumberbatch use the science of deduction to solve crime in Britain as literature’s most famous detective.

Each episode of the BBC television series is over an hour long, which makes uninterrupted binge-watching a breeze. Can you and your roommates solve the mystery before the end of the episode?

Beware of one thing: a new season airs only every few years, so you’ll have to wait a while for more bingeing! In the meantime, all seasons of Sherlock are on Netflix.

7. Riverdale

In a small town known as Riverdale, a rich teenage girl is murdered. Residents investigate the murder, revealing the town’s dark secrets along the way.

Riverdale is based on the original Archie’s Americana comic series from the 1940s but inspired by the show Twin Peaks. Fans of the Americana series will love this dramatic, moody twist on its plot.

Plus, Cole Sprouse stars in Riverdale. Who doesn’t love Cole Sprouse?

Riverdale’s second season will air in October on the CW, so you aren’t too far behind. Start bingeing season one now on Netflix.

8. Marvel: The Defenders

As the latest Marvel television series on Netflix, The Defenders brings four superheroes together — each from their own Netflix shows — to fight crime in New York City.

Before you binge this show, you should watch the individual series first (more binge-watching!) so you don’t get lost. Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Luke Cage can all be found on Netflix as well.

You and your roommates will get hooked on the Marvel universe in no time.

Drama

9. This is Us

This Is Us is going to pull at your heartstrings in every episode. The show follows the lives of several people sharing the same birthday.

After just one season, This Is Us received an MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Tearjerker Moment of 2017. Have tissues handy, because you and your roommates are going to cry. A lot. But still, you won’t be able to stop watching.

The nine-season-long soap opera follows seven friends from high school to post-college years. One Tree Hill holds enough suspense, drama, and comedy to keep you and your roomies entertained for days.

You’ll laugh together, cry together, and sometimes get a little angry together. You can probably also find some inspirational quotes from the show to decorate your living space with.

You can watch One Tree Hill on Amazon Video and Netflix!
